The evacuation of stranded tourists from Jiuzhaigou, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Sichuan province, is the latest casualty of China’s intensifying flood season. The scenic area was forced to close due to mudslides triggered by heavy rain from Typhoon Noul.

China enters its peak flood control window – known as Qixia Bashang – with weather experts warning that extreme rainfall will increase in frequency and intensity over the coming weeks, particularly in northern China. This region can expect 20-50 per cent more precipitation than usual, exacerbating vulnerabilities in mountainous regions prone to mudslides and soil erosion.

Recent landslides across China are a worrying sign that climate change is exacerbating existing vulnerabilities. In July alone, at least four landslides claimed numerous lives in different parts of the country. Chongqing witnessed a massive landslide following torrential rain that killed 11 people and left 50 others missing. Similarly, Gansu experienced flash floods that took the lives of 10 tourists and injured 23 others.

The frequency and ferocity of these events highlight China’s inadequate measures to address climate change. Despite investing heavily in flood control infrastructure, the country’s mountainous regions remain particularly vulnerable to extreme weather conditions. Mudslides and soil erosion are common occurrences during the peak summer rainy season, underscoring the need for more effective mitigation strategies.

China’s reliance on its massive dam network is increasingly being questioned as a viable solution to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events. While dams can control water flow and prevent floods in some instances, they have been shown to exacerbate the problem by altering natural river courses and increasing sedimentation.

The government’s swift response to recent disasters raises questions about the effectiveness of its long-term adaptation strategies. As extreme weather events become more frequent and intense due to climate change, China must re-evaluate its approach to mitigating their impact.
